Percentage of total GCSE marks:

 

60% - of which 20% Designing/A3 design sheets, 40% Making – practical and supporting preparation/evaluation.

 

Number of pieces of coursework and their titles:

 

One.  Title is usually the chosen Brief – pupils usually have choice of three of four Briefs.

 

Summary of what the coursework involves:

 

Brief – Analysis – Precise but detailed research à design ideas which lead to choice of product to be developed.  Detailed practical development leading to development of a new product.

 

Which months the coursework is tackled:

 

September 2007 until early March 2008.

 

When coursework is due to be handed in:

 

Early March 2008.

 

Some tips for producing good coursework:

 

Ø   Listen to instructions as to how to tackle individual sections.

Ø   Keep up-to-date with your work/meet deadlines.

Ø   Individual research à visiting web sites; stores/supermarkets, collecting labels, etc.

Ø   Follow teacher’s advice.

Ø   Good survey/interview.

 

How parents can support their son/daughter with coursework:

 

Ø   Encourage research à encourage pupils to meet deadline.

Ø   Evaluation of practical work – taste testing giving positive suggestions as to change/ adaptations.

Ø   Provide ingredients for practical work.

 

What help the department provides:

 

Ø   As well as classroom teaching, individual pupils encouraged to seek help at break/ lunchtime.

Ø   Practical investigation - many food ingredients provided.

 

How students should go about asking for further assistance if they feel help is needed:
