Percentage of total GCSE marks:

 

60% (of which 40% is designing folder, 60% is making).

 

Number of pieces of coursework and their titles:

 

One piece of coursework comprising both practical and design folder.

 

Summary of what the coursework involves:

 

A design folder which meets the needs of the given design brief, including research, analysis, development of specifications, design ideas, development and evaluation leading to a suitable final idea.  This is accompanied by a high quality practical product of their final design.

 

Which months the coursework is tackled:

 

July 2007-early March 2008

 

When coursework is due to be handed in:

 

March 2008.

 

Some tips for producing good coursework:

 

Ø   Be organised – and meet all deadlines.  Follow teacher advice.

Ø   Do not spend too long on research.  Only include relevant information and evaluate it.

Ø   Label all design ideas thoroughly and evaluate them

Ø   Be organised when buying patterns and fabric – buy them as soon as possible.

Ø   Try hard to get the best quality finish on your practical work.  Do not settle for second best!

 

How parents can support their son/daughter with coursework:

 

Ø   Help them to gather research.

Ø   Help them get the necessary fabrics, components, etc.

Ø   Guide them to meet deadlines!

 

What help the department provides:

 

Ø  Frequent lunchtime workshops

Ø  Workshops after school (two nights/week).

Ø   Help sheets and individual tutorials as needed.

 

How students should go about asking for further assistance if they feel help is needed:

 

Ø   Make an appointment to discuss coursework outside the lessons if necessary with their teacher.

Ø   Please telephone class teacher if further assistance is required.
