Percentage of total GCSE marks:  60%

48% Practical (4 activities)   12% Analysis of performance    40% Theory

Summary of what the coursework involves:

All pupils who take GCSE Physical Education must complete a Personal Exercise Plan (PEP).   The work completed supports their Analysis of Performance grade (10% of their final mark).  The aim of the coursework is for pupils to plan a training programme in order to develop an area of fitness.  They then carry out their programme during the summer holidays (training two or three times a week for six weeks), assessing their fitness levels and evaluating the success of their programme.

Which months the coursework is tackled: In lessons from May until the end of the summer term.

When coursework is due to be handed in:  Beginning of November.

Some tips for producing good coursework:

All coursework must be word processed using a variety of presentation techniques including text, graphs and pictures.  There will be NO lesson time allocated for pupils to word process their work.

Pupils should:

Ø   Be attentive in class so subject area is fully understood.

Ø   Ensure they have all notes and work sheets provided in class (missing a lesson is not an excuse for not having work – they must ask their subject teacher for work they have missed).

Ø   Regularly show the subject teacher the work they are doing so that it can be checked.  Advice can then be provided on how to improve the PEP.

How parents can support their son/daughter with coursework:

Ø   Check PE file and planners to ensure work is completed and well organised.

Ø   Ensure their child is training two to three times a week during the summer holidays.

Ø   Ensure their child is copying up results and is word processing their work.

What help the department provides:

Before the pupils begin the planning of their PEP, they will be taught about:

(1)  The principles of training.  (2) The effects of training.  (3) Different training methods.

Pupils will undertake theory and practical elements during lesson time in order for them to fully understand how to plan and commence a successful PEP.

When pupils return from the summer holidays, they will be given the opportunity to have their work checked by their teacher so that recommendations can be made.

How students should go about asking for further assistance if they feel help is needed:

Talk to their teacher.
