Art & Design

 

Percentage of total GCSE marks:

 

60% Coursework. 40% Exam (a practical project).

 

Number of pieces of coursework and their titles:

 

A minimum of two coursework units/maximum of five – all practical and containing preparation for and completion of final pieces.  Topics are various and based on a broad range of themes

 

Summary of what the coursework involves:

 

Ø   Recording of observations, experiences and ideas.

Ø   Analysing and evaluation images, objects and artefacts, demonstrating an understanding of context.

Ø   Developing ideas and exploring materials.  Reviewing, modifying and refining work as it progresses.

Ø   Creating final solutions and relating work to artists you have studied.

 

Which months the coursework is tackled:

 

The coursework is developed continually from the very first day of the course.  Essentially everything produced in art counts towards the coursework!

 

When coursework is due to be handed in:  January 2008.

 

Some tips for producing good coursework:

 

Ø   Follow carefully advice from your teacher, both verbal and written information.

Ø   Ensure each project contains work from observation.

Ø   Use sketchbooks effectively – think about presentation and visual appeal of sketchbook work.

Ø   Complete homework on time and to the best of your ability as homework is an integral part of the coursework.

 

How parents can support their son/daughter with coursework:

 

Ø   Guided use of internet for researching the works of artists.

Ø   Encourage an interest in art, eg visits to galleries, etc.

Ø   Provide art materials for use at home when completing homework.

 

What help the department provides:

 

Ø   Continual support and advice, check lists and individual targets.

Ø   After school and weekend workshops at crucial times.

Ø   Use of facilities at lunch break every day.

Ø   ‘Shop’ for purchase of specialised materials at cost.

 

How students should go about asking for further assistance if they feel help is needed:

 

Ø   Ask your teacher directly, immediately and frequently if you are unsure about any aspect of your work – we are always there to help.
