Dear prospective candidate,

You are considering applying for a very important role at Stokesley School. Your role will be to work as part of our Ethos Team with a specific responsibility around behaviour management. You will manage our internal exclusion facility ensuring students obey the school rules whilst in the room and do not fall behind with their learning. If students continue to make poor choices, you will – of course – be supported with this by senior members of staff and a clear escalation policy. While students are working, you will also play a pivotal role in monitoring and developing our current systems for tracking behaviour incidents, communicating with parents/carers and implementing additional sanctions where necessary.

Although a proportion of your working day will be spent in the internal exclusion room with our students, you will also be working in the wider school. As part of the Ethos Team, you will have the opportunity to support students in a variety of ways, focus on the development of your area of responsibility and explore interventions for reducing the number of students requiring a spell in the room (although this number is already very small). Our Ethos Team currently consists of the following staff: an Assistant Headteacher in charge of Engagement and Wellbeing; 5 teaching Heads of Year; a Head of Pastoral Intervention; and three Ethos Team members who are non-teaching and support the day-to-day management of students and their engagement in school.

Alongside our school sanctions, we are a school that works with Pivotal Education in terms of behaviour management. We believe that adults are more adept at managing their reactions to stressful situations than students are and – although a firm hand is absolutely necessary with no grey areas – we do not shout at or belittle students when reprimanding them. Modelling how we wish our students to interact with others is crucial in supporting them to develop for their future.
