Course Content

All students in years 7 to 13 are encouraged to maximise their potential through participation, coaching, and observation and analysis of a variety of activities. This develops an aesthetic awareness and an appreciation of human movement and performance.

By the end of each key stage, pupils are expected to know, apply and understand the matters, skills and processes specified in the relevant programme of study.

Independent Learning

Independent Learning KS3

The focus during years seven, eight and nine is very much learning through the physical. The PE department operates an extensive timetable of extra curricular activities which is open to all students who come along in their own time to work on aspects of skill, develop fitness or to socialise with friends. These clubs take place before school, during lunch-time and after school. During the Health Related Exercise theme fitness tests are carried out and students are encouraged to research what the data reveals about specific levels of fitness. Additionally, when there are major sporting events taking place, mini research projects have been set to explore further events such as the Olympics and World Cups

Independent Learning KS4 (GCSE PE)

Our GCSE students are set homework on a regular basis to reinforce the learning of the theoretical components of the course. There is also a Personal Exercise Programme to design and complete which focuses on cardio-vascular fitness and continuous training as well as muscular endurance and circuit training. This project contributes to the overall GCSE grade which is also assessed through practical performance of four main activities and a written examination.

Sixth Form Recreation

On a Wednesday afternoon there are a number of opportunities to take part in sport. The swimming pool, squash courts and gym are all free of charge (after a gym induction). Other sports such as badminton and football are available if facilities / numbers allow. Students are required to wear appropriate kit at all times.

We were delighted to hear that former student Ben has been awarded a 1st class Hons degree in Sport Science from Loughborough after achieving an A Grade in A Level PE. This is an amazing achievement which Ben has managed to combine with continued dedication to athletics. Ben gained huge success in athletics at school and has gone on from strength to strength with a current personal best of 10.52s in the 100m, ranking him 38th in the country for men and 12th at U23 level. All being well Ben hopes to continue his studies at Loughborough to do his Masters in Sports Physiology. Stokesley School (and especially PE!) are very proud of him!
