Fast and furious Quicksticks hockey tournament

07 February 2020  |  Darren Smith

The Lead On team, five students from Years 8 and 9, welcomed four primary schools (Hutton Rudby, Ingleby Greehow, Osmotherley & Stokesley) to the SSSC Years 3 and 4 Quicksticks Hockey tournament, hosted at Stokesley School.

Quicksticks is version of hockey aimed at primary schools students played with a bigger, lighter ball so the action was very fast and furious from the outset.  You would never have known that for many of the 24 competitors this was their very first taste of playing in a ‘real’ competition. They worked hard all afternoon, passing, moving, tackling, intercepting and, of course, scoring goals.  The competition was very close, just like the recent netball tournament, it came down to goal difference with Stokesley’s superior firepower just edging out a very determined Ingleby Greenhow for the top spot! Thank you, as ever, to the support of our five umpires

Lindsey Asher, Stokesley School Sports Coordinator, commented: “As the afternoon went on it was great to see the teams really gelling together and improving their teamwork, leading to some great passing and the creation of lots of scoring opportunities.  An amazing 46 goals were scored across the competition!”

For anyone in Years 3, 4, 5 or 6 interested in playing some more hockey there are free training sessions run by Stokesley Hockey Club on Thursday evenings. Please contact Dave Tucker 07443 436664 for more details or visit https://www.pitchero.com/clubs/stokesleyhockeyclub
